After Graduation Party

Just a reminder to anyone who is coming out for Kevin's graduation--we are having a BBQ at the DeLong's house around 4 pm. It simply sounds delicious! If you are planning on coming, please make sure either Kevin or I know you are coming so we can give Steve and JoAnn a count (if you don't tell us, you might not have any food to eat. ;) haha). We are really excited to see everyone that is coming out this week! And also those of you in Utah who we will be seeing much more often now! :) Woo! We can't wait!

Graduation and Future Plans

Greetings Friends and Family--

Although most of you probably already know, I am graduating May 15th at UNR. You are all invited if you would like to come (There will be no snail mail invitations). Of course, I understand that graduations are excruciatingly dull formalities and we live a good chunk of distance away from most of you so I completely understand if you are unable or unwilling to make it. No friend or family points will be deducted :) lol.

Aside: Technically graduation is called "commencement," anybody who can explain such shenanigans will win 3 gratitude points.

Saturday afternoon after "commencement" Steve and JoAnn have been generous enough to offer a dinner (BBQ is the front runner right now) at their lovely new mansion. Please email/text/call/whatever me or Kaitlin and let us know if you will be there so I can help them plan how much food they need.

Finally, there will be all sorts of hustle and bustle during graduation weekend because Kaitlin and I are moving to Utah! "Why?" you ask. Because we love you all so much of course! Well, we also love JoAnn & Steve's family and our friends here...so our love of everybody in Utah is not the whole reason. After some difficult decision making, Kaitlin and I have decided that accepting a Presidential Fellowship at Utah State University to study Early American Cultural and Intellectual history in their MA program is the best choice.

Added Bonus: We are hopeful that Kaitlin will be granted residency at USU, which would mean my Fellowship (and savings from Kaitlin's great work over the past couple years) would be enough for both of us to go to school there. Kaitlin should be able to complete her BA or BS while I get my MA. Assuming everything goes as planned, we should know very soon whether or not Kaitlin will get residency and if we have avenues to appeal to if she doesn't.

Those are pretty much all the happenings going on right now. Kaitlin has been working on a post covering our DC vacation that I think she'll have up shortly so watch for it! :)

DC or Bust--Spring Break 2010

--a quote by Dr. Samuel Johnson that I was constantly reminded of while seeing and experiencing the various sights, sounds, and ideas of DC.

Our trip began rather ominously with our flight experiencing lots of turbulence for about thirty minutes as we approached Reagan National. Needless to say we were more than ready to get off the plane and get to our hotel as soon as we could. Foreshadowing our next few days, Washington DC welcomed us with a cold rain. We had been reading Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol, which takes place in DC, so we were doubly anticipating and looking forward to our experience there. Although our vacation wasn't quite as intense as Robert Langdon's visit to DC we still thought it was awesome!

On our first morning at the hotel we were awakened by somebody drilling our door frame—yes at eight in the morning,without warning, somebody had a drill and was doing something to our door. Of course Kaitlin was completely composed but I was a bit unnerved. Since we hadn't been warned by hotel management, I thought it was pretty freaky that somebody was trying to drill our door off. Even the front desk said there shouldn't be anybody messing around outside our door. Eventually, we found out that it was just hotel maintenance re-installing parts of our external door frame. Still, it was an odd way to start out our trip.

Because it was raining we decided we should hit the Smithsonian Museums for the next couple days. We decided to see the Museum of Natural History first:

After that, we went to the Museum of American History. Probably the coolest thing at this museum is a huge display that contains the actual star spangled banner. The flag is massive despite being cut off a little bit. Apparently back in the day people used to cut off small pieces to take as trinkets from it. It's behind a giant glass wall now though so no more of that. Unfortunately, the museum did not allow anybody to take pictures of it for some reason ( as good revolutionaries we tried to anyway).

The next day we tried to go up to Library of Congress and to the Capitol Building but both were closed since it was Sunday. So we went to the Botanical Gardens instead.

Then we decided to see the Smithsonian Museum on the American Indian. This museum was a bit underwhelming since quite a few of the exhibits actually contained more about the Europeans meeting and influencing the Natives than information about the Natives themselves. However, the architecture of the building (to be fair, the architecture of pretty much every building there was awesome and possibly the best part) was really cool and there were a few very nifty sculptures.

Following our visit to the American Indian Museum, we walked up to the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. We were only able to see about half of the museum because it was closing about 30 minutes after we got there.

Monday we finally got to see the Library of Congress (Jefferson Building). This building is quite possibly the most beautiful building I have ever seen and probably my favorite thing that we did/saw in DC. Whether covered in sculpture, texture, painting, fresco, or any number of other amazing masterpieces, every inch of the building is artistic. The exhibits were also really interesting—especially a reconstruction of Jefferson's library that he sold to the Library of Congress after it burned down during the War of 1812, which included many of Jefferson's original books.

After the Library of Congress, we followed an underground tunnel that connects the Library to the Capitol Building. We felt like we were in Dan Brown's book! Sort of. Okay, we didn't at all...but it was still cool. We actually got to the Capitol pretty close to its closing time so we didn't get to see a whole lot of it.

Tuesday the weather was finally improving so we set out to see the monuments. Although I have seen all of these monuments in photos or movies, seeing them in person is a completely different experience.

Wednesday was Old Town Alexandria day. I think I expected more old and less town. It was pretty much just a touristy shopping district and there didn't seem to be very many historical things there. We did, though, still find fun stuff to do—a great place to eat and an amazing street performer. You have to watch this video!

We spent our final day in the DC area at Mount Vernon, which was amazing.

Goings on...

So not too much has been happening the past couple months. We are starting to hear back from some of the schools that Kevin applied to. Last week, a professor from one school emailed Kevin telling him that he was nominated for a Fellowship, and today another professor from another school emailed pretty much the same thing. So we are assuming that he has been accepted into these schools since he is eligible for their scholarships. :) Once we have official letters from these schools we'll specify which ones they are (or of course you can talk to us individually and we'll tell you so we don't have to put this information on the internet right now), but since he is just dealing with the specific professors in these history departments right now we think the information may be off the record. Essentially, these departments are trying to make sure Kevin doesn't commit to other schools yet. We expect official letters over the next few weeks. So it's getting exciting! We are not sure if we want to stay here in Nevada with some of the budget cuts, but we will see what everyone has to offer.
Also, we are getting ready to go on our trip to Washington, DC! We are getting more and more excited as we get closer to going. We are going to have a blast! Last year when we went to Texas for the Frandsen family reunion, our flight back to Nevada was over-booked. So we decided to camp out in the Dallas airport for a few more hours and take the free vouchers the airline offered. So we are using the vouchers they gave us towards our flights for this trip. We leave this friday and come back next friday. So we have a whole week to play! If ya'll have any suggestions, let us know! We pretty much know where we want to go, but are definately open to more ideas. :)
Finally, to get ready for our trip, I decided to make my hair a normal color once more. I thought I could just go back to blonde, but that involved stripping my hair...which I did not want to do. So...I now have brown hair! It's different but I really really like it. I think it fits well and it is definately more normal than red. :) We will be posting pictures soon of my hair and our trip! Enjoy!

My New Hair

Hi Everyone!! It's been forever since we have updated this. A few things that have happened... I got permanently hired at my job in Tahoe, Kevin finished applying to grad schools--so we are just waiting on the edge of our seats now ;), we had a nice and small Christmas just to ourselves, stayed up and watched the ball drop in NY for New Year's, and (drumroll please...) I got my hair dyed! I'm sure all of you will be surprised to hear that it's red now. I just wanted to warn you before you looked at the pictures. ;) This was the first time I had it professionally done, and I probably would not have done it any other way (due to the color). Kevin and I both really liked this color on other people, so we thought "Why not?" and we love it on me, too! It's very different but very fun. I'm finally getting used to it and not getting startled every time I look in the mirror. ;) Sometimes I feel like I even have a more daring or outspoken personality. Well, I hope you enjoy the pictures! Sorry...the first one is a little scary/intense... ;)

First Anniversary-Lake Tahoe

For our first anniversary, we went up to Lake Tahoe to the Shakespeare Festival. We got there early so Kevin took me to a place he remembered going to as a kid. Pretty much it's just a lot of huge rocks by the shore that you can climb out on. It was really cool...and a little scary at times...but I'm glad we got to see another beautiful part of the lake. The picture above is just a little pool with some of the smaller rocks. The water is so clear and we could see little minnows swimming around. :) Kevin loved climbing the rocks! He would just run up them while I was still trying to figure out how not to kill myself by standing on them.

The stage of the Shakespeare Festival. We saw Much Ado About Nothing. It was really good! We both enjoyed it. Our only complaint about the evening was that it got really cold when the sun went down...and we didn't bring enough blankets. But we just huddled toghether to keep as warm as we could. Other than that, it was great! The story was funny, the actors did a wonderful job, and it was all a happy ending. :)

We're On A Boat! :)

Hey everyone! We haven't posted anything for a while so here are a couple for ya'll!

Stephen's dad took us out on his boat this summer. It was so fun to be out with friends and soak up some sun...but I'm sure you still can't tell we even went outside by the blinding whiteness of our skin. ;) We all went swimming in the lake and the boys went wakeboarding while Susan and I took most of the pictures. It was a very fun and relaxing day...followed by watching the new Harry Potter! :)

Our 4th of July

So our 4th of July was really fun! Caleb, our friend out here who grew up with Kevin, invited us out to Fallon to celebrate with him, his dad, and his brothers. We got to go swimming, eat delicious food, play some basketball and (drum roll please...) ride Caleb's dad's Cobra! It was so fun and we were really surprised that he let us crazy kids even touch it. But more than that, he let us (and almost had to persuade us to) drive it! ;)

Kevin took me on a ride. He was pretty pumped, as was I. I showed Kevin a side of me that he had never seen...getting excited over an awesome car! :)

That's right...I drove the Cobra! It is by far the coolest car I have ever driven. And probably the coolest one I will ever drive. And thank goodness it was an automatic or I probably would not have been able to drive it. It was sweet!

The Last Few Months...

Hey ya'll! So it's been forever since we have updated this so here goes...Sorry if it's really long. ;)

Well Kevin got me a camera for my birthday! So we've been trying to take more pictures... On my birthday we went out to Olive Garden with the gift certificate that Kevin's sister, Marie, gave us. It was super yummy! And I kicked off my 21st with a special drink...frozen lemonade! :)

Later that week, we had a little celebration with our friends, Stephen, Susan, and Caleb. Kevin got me an ice-cream cake ( I know,,,not Funfetti...can you believe it?) and it was really good! I had never had one before! Kevin picked out a good one!

Also in April, one of Kevin's friends from Fallon came home from his mission to Chile. So to welcome Mike home, Kevin treated him to a steak dinner at Texas Roadhouse! That's right...I still have a little bit of Texas even in Reno, Nevada. This place is so good. I think our favorite thing there are the rolls they give you before they bring out your food...because they serve it with this cinnamon butter. It's delicious! So here are Mike, Stephen, Susan, Me, and Kevin.

Then, we went down to Mike's house and played some Rockband! We pretty much dominated. ;) We were concentrating really hard...

During the Spring, Kevin played intramural soccer. His team did really well and made it to the playoffs! These are of Kevin getting pumped up for his games and showing off some of his sweet moves. ;)

One of our favorite things to do here in Reno is walk down to the river. On the weekends they usually have some fun things going on, but we also just like to sit and hang out on the rocks by the river. One weekend Kevin and I and Stephen, Susan, and Caleb went down to Riverfest.

Then to celebrate Susan's birthday, we went to see Wolverine: Origins! And to get ready for the movie the boys decided to shave a Wolverine beard. ;) Fierce huh?

Then just a couple weeks ago Kevin and I went to Donner Lake for Memorial Day. They have a little museum about the Donner party and some other pioneer things, too. It was really interesting. I'll try to tell you what some of the pictures are...
The first one is just a statue of some pioneers. Then there I am with a covered wagon. Then "Mormon Island". The next one kinda made me laugh...it's a horse snow shoe. I had no idea they had those. :) Then Kevin with a bear! Ahh! JK, ;) The next ones are of a statue outside the museum showing how deep the snow was when the Donner party was in this area. The snow was about 21 feet deep which is how tall the statue is. There is also the plaque on the statue. Then we actually got to the lake. It was beautiful up there! We ended up driving around the lake for a bit also and we found a little beach that we relaxed on for a little while...until it started raining and hailing. ;)

So our last pictures are of when we went to the drive-in theater out here. We watched Angels & Demons. It was really fun! We had never been there before so it was nice to go somewhere different. :)

Alright, so the latest thing that has been going on was that Kevin's parents came out this past weekend for a short visit. It was fun to see them again. They got us lots of food which was wonderful because we were running a little low. ;) They also brought out the movie Forever Strong and we watched that one night. It was a really good show! We all enjoyed it.

Well it seems that this is quite long so I will wrap it up. But we are really excited to see ya'll soon!

Changes

Haha so I was looking at the last post we made and a lot has changed since then. ;) The biggest thing is that I quit working at Wells Fargo about a month ago. It seemed like it would be the perfect job for me, but I realized I really hate selling which a lot of the job is based on. So I've kinda been flitting around with jobs which is kinda fun, but I am still looking for something more permanent. So I am at work right now with one of our friends out here, Susan. She works in Tahoe just in customer service so it's awesome! :)
Also, Kevin has been playing soccer intermurals and they did really well. I have some pictures of their last game that I will post later at home. :)
Kevin's schooling is doing great,too! He only has about a week or two left with finals. He is also doing some summer classes so it's still going to be busy busy for him. One class he has over the summer is Spanish and he is kinda worried about it, but his friend just came back from Chile so he is going to help him a lot.
Other than that I think things are going well. Hope things are going well with all of you guys! We are excited to see you soon for the family reunion!

Finished Training!

Hey ya'll! So I have officially finished my training for my job and I start my new schedule on Tuesday! And, yes, I have a 3 day weekend and it is much needed. This doesn't sound like much compared to Spring Break this next week for Kevin, but he will be working hard on his school work and all his papers he has to write.
So on Friday at work we had a little graduation for our class and they recognized us for our numbers. We have a thing called QA where we get monitored on some of our calls to see if we are meeting expectations on our calls and I had the highest average EVER! And I was right on track with my other stats, which I was a little worried about towards the end of training. So everything went well and I'm excited to start my new schedule! Hope everything is going well with everyone!

Stephen's Pictures and Other News

Greetings Family and Friends!

I finally had a chance to post the pictures Stephen sent me on a CD so everybody could see them (more pictures are posted below the text here). If you want to save them to your own computer you should be able to just right click on each picture and go to "Save Image As..."

He gave descriptions for some of them but not all of them. The one with all the people is the family he spent Christmas with and where he was when he called us. There are also some random pictures around his apartment. I think his room looks a little empty, maybe we should remedy this eh? :) Many of the other pictures are photos he took at a member's house who collects old or Book of Mormon related images and artifacts. One is a proposed map of one theory of Book of Mormon geography. It's quite interesting and I think Stephen likes that much of it corresponds with the Chris Heimerdinger books. Another is a mural of the Legend of Quetzalcoatl visiting the Lamanites (ie: Christ appearing in 3rd Nephi). The mural is painted on a Governor's Mansion wall in Mexico. The picture that I got a kick out of is the one of Stephen standing next to a kid he recently baptized--the kid is nearly as big as Stephen. I thought it would have been an interesting baptism to see.

As for Kaitlin and me, we have been busy, busy, busy. Kaitlin is more than halfway through her training with Wells Fargo and she seems to be doing quite well. She has moved on from the classroom to using the phones. Some days it seems like she is a natural. Other days she says she gets some pretty weird or rude calls. Most of the time she gets satisfaction from her work and that makes us happy. Also, Kaitlin's birthday is coming up soon and we're getting pretty excited for that. I have what I think are some pretty good ideas for stuff to get her, but if any of you have ideas please feel free to voice them. Kaitlin did such a wonderful job making my birthday fantastic back in November and I want to make sure I properly return the favor.

School and working at the library have been keeping me busy on my side of things, and for the most part I enjoy it. This has by far been my most demanding semester and I have upwards of 90 pages of papers due throughout my classes over the course of the semester. Trying to keep up with everything has been rather tedious but interesting, and hopefully it will get me all ready to write my undergraduate thesis in the fall. I'll share one funny anecdote from my Psychotherapy psychology class when we were talking about reinforcement and extinction:

There once was a retired pyschology professor who liked to relax in the peace and quiet of his retirement by reading, gardening, or playing his piano. He noticed a few months into his retirement that his front yard was a favorite gathering place of 7-10 kids from his neighborhood. They would gather on his lawn and play games or just talk and were often quite noisy. Finally, he couldn't handle it anymore and he decided to do something about it. He started going outside every day and giving each child a dollar. He told them that it gave him such satisfaction that they wanted to use his yard to gather and enjoy themselves. He kept this up for several weeks until the kids were expecting it; then he stopped. The kids were so upset and annoyed that he wouldn't pay them to play in his yard anymore that they decided they would show him by never giving him the satisfaction of playing in his yard again.

Haha...I thought the story was pretty clever and my professor swears it's a true story. Most of us in the class thought he was going out initially to pay them to stay out of his yard, but that would have been reinforcement for them to come back again so they could get paid more.

Anyway, when Kaitlin and I have free time we've been going down to the gym to play racquetball and pool or we watch movies using Netflix. Kaitlin is quite the pool shark and I was kind of surprised. She usually beats me in pool, but I can usually best her in racquetball. Last weekend we got to go to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City with the history club and that was lots of fun for us. We realized too late that we should have brought a camera so we could share it with everybody, but I guess we'll have to remember next time.

Well, I suppose there's plenty to look at and plenty to read on this post already. We hope that life is treating you all as well as it's treating us. We miss everybody and think of you often. Take care, we love you all!

Work

So my first week is complete! Woo! :) The first couple days we just filled out paper work...so it was very easy and we didn't have to remember anything. :) About the third day we got a binder with about 4 inches of papers...our curriculum. That was not a happy day. ;) Just kidding. So we started into it...just learning about our computers and the systems we use...bla bla bla. ;) And we did some online lessons and took a little test at the end of all of them. I have gotten 100% on all, thank you very much. ;) But there is a lot to learn so it's a little overwhelming at times but I am very excited for it...every day i get more excited and more relieved when we find out what we are really going to be doing. It sounds perfect for me. :)
And today was my last day at Bath and Body and they didn't even need so I finally got to sleep in a bit. :) It was much needed. Anyways...I think thats about it for the job. Everything else has been pretty normal around here. Talk to everyone later! Thanks for all your support! :)

So...a few things have happened so we finally have something to write about! :)

First...I got a new job! Woo! Bath and Body has just been cutting down on hours a ton so I was looking looking looking for something new. I was hoping for like a receptionist/front office kind of job but I also looked at banks. And that's where I found it! Wells Fargo was hiring out here so I will be a "Phone Banker". It's basically customer service and then trying to sell things, too. So it should be pretty nice...more hours and better pay! Yay! :) So I put my two weeks notice in on Saturday and I start my banking career on January 26th! Wish me luck! ;)

Second, Kevin just took the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) today. It's like the SAT for college to go on to Grad school. He did really well! He already has a lot of his scores back...for the verbal and quantitative parts. There is also a writing part that he doesn't have back yet. But so far he thinks he is in about the 80th percentile! So all the schools he is looking into for grad school need just about that. :) The schools he is looking into are, of course, UNR, University of Oregon, University of Virginia, University of Victoria (Canada), and maybe University of Utah. So I'm pretty excited where we could end up! :) Kevin starts school tomorrow as well. He is thinking that he will only have about a year or year and a half to go till he can graduate! Yay!

Third, Kevin started looking at a possible class schedule for the summer around the reunion and he will have Fridays off! So we are thinking that we will come out for the reunion Thursday night so we will be there Friday through Sunday! We are so excited to see everyone!

And last, I finally got a calling in my ward...I'm the new Relief Society Music Leader.... :) I was kinda surprised at first, but I think it will be fun. I think it's the perfect one for me. :)

Oh! This is the last one, I promise! We just got a new bathroom shelf! Woo! Haha. ;) So now we have lots more space for all those towels we got for our wedding! Hehe jk. But it will be nice to have a bit more room now. And Kevin was so good to put it all together the day we got it! :) And it looks so nice!

Hey ya'll! So we decided to try out this blogging thing to try and stay in touch and let you know what we are up to out here in Reno, Nevada. :) So have patience while we are still figuring it out and if you have any tips we will gladly take them. Hope to have this up and running soon!
